When is the best time to ask for an autograph?

I have no idea why I am writing this but.....here goes:
When is a good time to ask an athlete for their autograph? I would say for the most part that athletes have an obligation to give the fans a quick autograph say, after a practice, possibly after a game (especially when they win), at a dinner or promotion. I am not saying be Cal Ripken and sign things for 2 hours, but if I saw Bob Sanders at the stadium or on the street I would ask..and I would expect him to sign....I really do not know all the specifics on Peyton Manning's contract with ALL the things he is promoting but darn it, if I see him I want his signature...for most fans to pay all the money for tickets, the jerseys, hats, etc I would say one autograph would be nice...I do understand that some only want an autograph for profit, which I think is ridiculous, but it is the nature of the beast...A player has no idea if I am a fan which would treasure a signature whether I can read it or not or if I am here to sell it to the highest bidder....If I am not obnoxious and overbearing why not sign a piece of paper...why do I have to pay hundreds for something I would treasure as millions, but would be as cheap and easy as a scribble on a piece of paper??? Living in New York, I really do not have the outlet or funds to fly to Indianapolis "hoping" for that one moment I can muster the courage to ask a player to sign my program, etc.. I do know it might be the only way to get my favorite players to sign something for my trophy case. Heck, I would love if the backup punter would sign something for my Colts collection.. Maybe I should bring it up to the front office? Possibly send them a letter asking for a particular player or players autographs on a piece of paper or a picture? We all know it rarely happens...So I am asking you Colts fans, when is the proper time to ask an athlete for his autograph? perhaps never? Well these are my thoughts, yes I have way too much free time....thanks...

Great Question!!! I work with a lot of people that go to Church with Tony Dungy. When he started his book signing tour they all said I'll get it signed at Church. Not the proper place!!! I waited tables for a lot of years, and served a lot of celebrities. If theye're with friends or family, DON'T bother them!!! There are meet and greets after the games, although most won't involve the starters. Autograph sessions are a great place too. If you happen to run into somebody where nobody else realises who he is, use your best judgentment. Don't risk creating a scene, don't cut into family and friends time, and don't be pushy. If you want to get a certain players autograph, send him something personal, like a birthday card addresed to a single person (like Pargeman) so the player knows it isn't an autograph broker. Most big name players have contracts that restrict the autographs they can sign, but are still able to sign autographs in certain occasions.

"So call you a lawyer, file you a lawsuit,I'll smile in the courroom, buy you a wardrobe..." Slim Shady doesn't like to be approached in public. Sorry. For some reason, everything is reminding of Eninem lately.

thanks to all so far for commenting on my blog..of course I give any player their right to privacy...I wouldnt rush up to anyone having dinner or hanging with family, but what I am saying is, there should be time set aside before, during, or after the season for the fans who support these players and coaches...thanks...

I am trying to remember who had the blog just recently... og jayhacket, look him up and then let me know if you would still ask for an autograph. Personally, at a sporting event is great, maybe at a luncheon if your not just going there for an auto. But that is just me. Think about how you would feel if someone kept after you for an auto, especially when your trying to spend time with family that you barely get to see. At Tony's luncheon a few weeks ago we went to present Coach with his Florida Colts fan items, should had seen the line of people behind us thinking it was okay for an autograph... this was before the ceremony even started and it was to honor him. I think the most part are the people who just get autographs to resale them.. those people really don't care.

I once got Rohn Stark's autograph after a charity basketball game at a nearby high school. I would ask any time unless someone tells them to leave, they are with their family, or in the bathroom. as long as we let them be people, really any time is a good time.

I agree with Janell, just give us your stuff and we'll take good care of it for ya. ;) No really training camp is a great place if your aggressive. After the game a lot of them will sing as they leave. If you get to go to an away game that should be a good time too.

I agree, at the sdatdium or at a meet and greet is appropriate, out at dinner or when with the familhy is not. Sending a self addrssed stamped envelope will usually get whatever you send signed and returned. Good luck
