Blog: Dungy Perspective

Final thoughts on 2007 Season

I never thought I'd be writing the final chapter to the season so soon.  We felt we were rested up and ready for San Diego and we had a good plan of attack.  But like most games, this one came down to the things we always stress--don't give up big plays, don't turn the ball over and don't have unnecessary penalties.  That is usually a strength of ours but in the Chargers game we let all these things show up.  And to their credit, they kept fighting back and made the big plays when it counted.

Yesterday's team meeting is always the one you dread.  The finality of not playing anymore, of the season just being over with no warning, is what makes the NFL playoffs so special.  There are no second chances and no excuses accepted.  But when you lose, there is nothing to do but look to next year.  Your players and staff realize how much work you have put in and what it takes to just get to that point.  You know you're going to have to start over and do more than that in 2008.  But that's what football, and life, are all about. Trying your best, giving it everything you have, accepting the result, and then gearing up for the next challenge.  And that's what I love most about our team--they have always been able to refocus and gear up for the next challenge.

So many people want to know what I am going to do next year and most of the media believe I have made up my mind already.  They don't believe me when I say that my wife and I will sit down this week and talk and pray about what is best for our family.  But that is what we're going to do.  I really enjoy coaching and wish I could do it forever, but I do know that God has placed a family in my care and I have a responsibiility to them first.  So we'll reach a family decision this weekend.

I'm going to let Jim Irsay know what my decision is Monday morning.  And shortly after that I'll post an entry and let you know.  But whether I come back or not, I want you to know how much I (and the Colts) appreciate your support.  We have a great group of fans and they are so important to our success.  It has been a fun year, a rewarding year in a lot of ways.  We just didn't finish it like we wanted.

Thanks again for being such fervent and special fans.

With Clark and Sanders back it doesn't seem like we're going to lose many people this offseason. Think we'll actually pick anyone up.

I read your book. It was inspiring. I bought a copy for my Cousin who could use some insight on life. Everyone's glad your staying. We know that you'll have to go eventually, but we can't help but to be gready. Thanks.

Draft Day Tip: Roman's 12: 9--21 Mathis and Freeney are perfect, but if you add one or two more all-pro quality defensive linemen then you will be able to utlilize a fresh pair of legs in the second half to keep constant pressure on Brady like the Giants did. Otherwise, the colts maybe in for another long season against very brutal black and blue defensive teams that will sure to compete and possibly place the colts back in the pack in the AFC.

Dear Coach Dungy, Greetings in the name of the Lord from the Windy City! My name is Tony and I believe I've been led to start a revolution - a revolution that I believe you have already been passionately living out for a long time. It sound scary to write this in black and white, but my dream is to empower this generation of dads to be the best dads we can be. I'd probably be preaching to the choir if I told you why this is so important. Sufficed to say, what a time in history to raise up and equip our fellow dads! I think we would greatly benefit from your perspectives. I'm first launching a website (www.savvydaddy.com) that will be packed with great insights on how to be a great dad and provide opportunities for dads to share their own stories. It won't be a "Christian" website, but many solid principles are baked into the core values (e.g. character matters). I'll also be tithing a portion of the profits to charities voted upon by the user community. Would you be interested in writing a monthly column for savvydaddy.com or being interviewed for it? How being a coach makes you a better dad or how being a dad makes you a better coach? Not all coaches are dads, but all dads are coaches! I think savvy daddy could be a great vehicle to get your message communicated across a broader audience of dads who might not normally read a book or be football fans. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to know more!
